Promoting Objects

This option allows you to select objects from the exported zip file, compare them with the target system, and generate another zip file for the changes you want to update to the target system. Ensure that you have run the Migration utility and selected Environment Promotion option.

To Promote objects:

  1. Select Promote and click Next

  2. Click Next to select the source location.

  3. Browse to and select the zip file that was created in the Export process.

  4. Click Next to select the target location.
  5. Browse to and select the Connect Server location (till Adeptia Server) from which source zip file is to be compared, for example, C:\Program Files\AdeptiaConnect\AdeptiaConnect-<version>\ConnectServer\AdeptiaServer.

  6. Click Next to select the group.

  7. The wizard displays a list of all the groups in Connect Server. Select the check box next to the group to promote objects.

You can select more than one group.

Click Compare Selected Objects to compare the source and target objects. The Compare Objects window appears.

The Compare Objects screen displays objects in a tree structure, which shows a comparison between the source and target objects at both the activity and field levels. It displays legends at the activity and field levels, which highlight the comparison and indicate whether the activity or field will be updated or not. The legends are displayed at the bottom of the screen and are outlined in the table below.

    Legend Service Name

    Description

Source and target objects are different. Once the source objects are promoted, the target objects will be updated.

Source and target objects are the same. Thus, promotion is not required in this case.

New record will be inserted from the source end to the target end, as the target database has additional parameters.

No source data exists for the particular target field.

When the source and target objects are different, they need to be updated at the target end. This is done by comparing the Activity ID of the objects at the source and target end.

You can delete an object from the Compare Objects screen.

Right-click the field/activity and select View Changes to view the changes between the source and target end.

    The View Difference window appears.

This window displays the Source and Target columns, which show the actual value of the attribute at the source and target ends. You can change the value in the Source Data column and click Update. This saves the modified value and updates it at the target end. The Target column is non-editable. So, to change a target object, you need to change its source object.

At times, the Source and Target columns are displayed as empty. If the Source column is empty, indicates fields are blank at the source end. The Target column is empty if there is no object at the target end.
  8. Right-click the Repository File Retention activity and select View Changes to view the changes between the source and target end.

    The View Difference window appears.

The window displays single letter in source and target data columns. These letters represents:

    ValueDescription

    L

    Do not Delete

    D

    Delete
    SDelete on Success
EDelete on Success except Source Data

  9. Click Close to return to the Compare Objects window. Click Close to return to the Select Group screen.

  10. Click Next to select the retain XML location. Skip this step if you don't want to retain objects in the target environment.

  11. Browse to and select the XML file if you already have else click Generate Retain XML to create an XML file to retain objects.

    1. The Generate Retain List window appears listing the services, as per the source zip.
    2. Select either a service or field(s) of a service to retain at the target environment. If you select a service then you can't further select field(s) of that service.
    3. Click Generate Retain XML.
    4. A dialog box appears to save the XML file. Provide the file name in the text box and click Save

  13. Click Next to start the Promote process. The progress of this process is displayed in the Log Details wizard.

This wizard displays all logs and confirms whether the promote operation is successful or not. If it is successful, "Promoting objects completed successfully" appears in the Log Details screen. In case of failure, it displays an error message and rollbacks the entire operation.

Click View PDF Report to view the list of all records that will be updated and inserted in the target environment in the Deployment state. A record is inserted at the target end when data at the source and target end differ.

  14. Click Finish to complete the promote process and exit the Migration utility.
